Visit the grandiose Lam Kinh Royal Citadel of Le Dynasty

Speaking to Thanh Hoa province, it is undeniable that this is the “sacred land of talented people”. This land is homeland of many outstanding talented that residents here are always proud of “ the land of Kings”. It mean the land bringing up lords and kings.

Lam Kinh citadel is located in Xuan Lam Commune, Tho Xuan District, Thanh Hoa Province, about 51 kilometers to the south of Thanh Hoa city. It is the Citadel built by King Le Thai To ( Le Loi). Lam Kinh Citadel also has another name Tay Ninh.



After 10 years leading Lam Son army uprising (1418-1428) against Minh invaders, Le Loi (King Le Thai To )came to the throne and set up the capital in Dong Kinh (Thang Long). King Le Thai To had taken the date of the first Thuan Thien (means follow the Heaven’s will), and had a citadel built in ancestral land Lam Son. That is Lam Son Citadel.

The north of Lam Kinh Citadel leans against Dau Mountain, the front is to the south and face Chu river – Chua Mountain as a screen, to the left is Phu Lam forest, to the right is Huong mountain and Ham Rong Mountain blocks in the west.

Royal parks, palaces and shrines in the Lam Kinh has layout of north – south axis on a hill with shape of “FDF” Four sides of Lam Kinh is 314meter long, 254 meter wide. The bow-shaped northern wall has the radius of 164 meters and 1 meter thick. According to archaeological works and the remnants of the pillars arranged in shape of chessboard, there were splendid Southern Gate, magnificent Dragon yard, main Temple and Imperial Temple probably existed here.

Linking the Dragon yard and the main Shrine is Dragon floor composed of nine dragons stairs and two pairs of dragon stone carved delicately, typical of Le dynasty’s dragon. Behind Lam Kinh Shrine is Thai temple running in arc shape and embracing the main zone.

About 100 meters outside the royal Citadel still remaining traces of 6-meter wide entrance, two sides have built two bow-shaped walls along to the bank of Pearl river. This river originates from West Lake, flows around the front of the Citadel and Lam Kinh shrine. According toHoang Viet Geography Book, the river water is crystal clear, the bottom has many beautiful gravels looks very lovely but no one dared to take. On the river there is a bridge named Tien Kieu Loan, also known as the White Bridge. Going over the bridge about 50 meters, you will meet an ancient well. In the past, lotus was planted to keep the water cool in the hot summer days.

Lam Kinh Citadel has royal Tomb of King Le Thai To and Vinh Lang Stele with the brief description compiled by Nguyen Trai about the entire achievement of King Le Thai To; Huu Tomb – Tomb of King Le Thai Tong. Besides there are Huu Lang – Tomb of Le Thai Tong, Khon Nguyen- Tomb of King Le Thanh Tong’s mother; Chieu Lang – Tomb of King Le Thanh Tong; Du Lang – Tomb of King Le Hien Tong; Kinh Lang – Tomb of King Le Tuc Tong; and Le Lai Temple.

Besides admiring the beautiful scenery and learn more about the value of culture, architecture, and history; every year on 22th August lunar calendar (death anniversary of King Le Thai To), visitors will have the opportunity to attend Lam Kinh Festival and immerse in the festival atmosphere of the highland people with a lot of folk traditional activities. And it is time to commemorate the glorious merits of the famous King in the history of feudal Vietnam.
