No one knows when panpipe was associated with conception, cultural life and spiritual life of Mong ethnic group.

The legend of panpipe

Mong ethnic people tell the legend of panpipe that once upon a time, there were six brothers in a family. They were very good at singing and playing flute. Their flute blew together highly as a peak or impetuously as a waterfall. In each festival, they also joined to play the flute. Later, when they got married, their flute became deviant.

Then, they decided to create a unique instrument. The oldest brother found out a gourd, the second brother thought of a long blowpipe, and other people thought about next blowpipes. All were six tubes instead six brothers. Strangely, that instrument which was completed was blown to make an attractive sound. Since then, it has become the present panpipe of Mong ethnic group.

Pan Pipe festival

Materials for making panpipe are mainly bamboo and wood taken in a forest. Design of panpipe is quiet simple, including five bamboo tubes, one big tube to connect last tubes. They collect old bamboo branches and clean up. Then, they put up on smoking-shelf about three months. After three months they, bring them down and carve one small hole on each tube. Main panpipe tube is made from wood and empty inside, carved several small holes to couple five other tubes to create the shape of the panpipe.


The most important part is the copper bar inside the panpipe. This is considered a larynx of panpipe. In the past, local people use copper to spread thin, then chopped and spliced it into the panpipe. Today, they have an available copper bar to fit simply into panpipe. The pairing of these tubes must be fitted together, do not let the air into it to ensure good sound.

Role of panpipe

Over the time, change of life but the love and attachment of Mong ethnic men with the panpipe is still stable. Panpipe sound always make Mong girls not only shameful, but also pleased to spread own umbrella spinning with dance rhythm. That melody also awakes everyone’s heart when watching it once.

Love story of Mong ethnic group is like that. It comes from simple panpipe sound but extremely romantic to create passional love nights. This is the unique culture in highland with mysterious nights of panpipe sound, heart, or sweetness of love – friendship. They dance in traditional melody.


Now, the panpipe is not only the close instrument of Mong ethnic people, but also the symbol of Mong ethnic culture in ethnic communities in Vietnam. It makes Vietnamese culture more diversified and distinctive.
