New Year Festival – Thingyan

Thingyan or Water Festival is one unique customs of Myanmar people. The country with more than 90% of population are Buddhists still keep their traditional customs for thousands years. The New Year Festival or Water Festival takes place in the second week of April and it lasts for three or four days. The festival is celebrated over the country, and Myanmar people congrats each other by split water over their clothes. Long time ago, in the night before New Year, Myanmar people cooked flowers and leaves to make fragrant water. They poured the water into bowls and bottles and then put the bottles in front of their houses during the festival. Each day, they used different leaves or flowers to make the water. Until now, although they are no longer using fragrant water, the festival still keep the sacred meaning in pagodas. And on the streets, people spray water to each other and make the festival a relax time. The more wet you are, the more happiness you will get in the next year.

Pagoda Festival

Shwedagon – one of the biggest and more sacred pagodas in Myanmar organizes Shwedagon Festival every year. It is a meaningful tradition to every people because the rituals affect spiritual life of Myanmar people. The Festival takes place in fifteen days with many Buddhism rituals and worships. It is a perfect combination of Buddhism worship with Myanmar traditional culture.

The Festival starts with a parade of thousands people. The people wear traditional clothes going barefoot around the temples and towels in the complex pagodas of Shwedagon. The sound of gongs in every corners combines with the praying of hundreds monks. It makes the spiritual space become sacred and mysterious.

Outside the pagodas, there is place for entertainment and outdoor activities. Myanmar people prepare many days for the singing, dancing and puppet shows. Besides the performance locate places for presenting and selling food and handmade ornaments.

Myanmar Traditional Music Festival
